Beckahm's Birth Story

Now that Beckahm is almost four months old I'm finally getting around to getting this blog started. Even though I'm a little behind I want to write about all of the important things that have happened so I have a way to remember all of the crazy details. We'll see how much I can remember 4 months later! Even though Beckahm wasn't due until May 9th, I was bound and determined to get him here as soon as possible when I hit 38 weeks. By this point I was completely uncomfortable and ready to get this baby out of my belly. On top of being huge it was impossible to sleep because of the severe leg cramps that always seemed to hit right when I was ready to go to bed!

On Saturday, April 30th David had a football game (He plays for the Dixie Rebels Semi-Pro football team). And he had a plan...He was going to play his game that night, I would go in and have the baby after, then breakfast at Denny's the next morning. He's so funny--they actually had him talk on the radio for being the defensive player of the game the week before and he had told them our plan while on the radio-it made me laugh so hard. So once he finished his game he asked if I was ready to go have a baby. As much as I wanted to be i hadn't felt anything and knew it wasn't going to happen any time soon. Sunday we woke up and had all sorts of things on our to do list of "how to get our baby here early." So we started out with a REALLY BUMPY drive up a canyon road in his car (everyone we talked to said this would do the trick). I just felt really uncomfortable and a little nervous that our car was going to break down after hitting all the pot holes (on purpose) to get the bumpy effect. So after a while of that I was ready to be done and try something else. Next we went to the store and bought me an exercise ball. I bounced on that thing for the rest of the day it seemed like. Still not a lot was going on so we ate some Cafe Rio (another trick we had been told would help--spicy food) in hopes that that would trigger something. After bouncing until about 10 o'clock that night I thought maybe I was feeling something. I think it could've partly just been my imagination because I wanted him here so bad, but we decided to go to the hospital anyways. We got there and they hooked me up to the contraction monitor and sure enough I was contracting and they were pretty strong. I was dilated to a 3, but needed to be at least a 4 for them to admit me. They told us to wait an hour and they would check again and hopefully have good news. In the mean time we sat and waited....and waited...while waiting a girl was brought into our same room and we were just separated by a curtain so we could hear what was going on. They hooked her up to the machine and she wasn't contracting or dilated, but because her water broke she would be admitted--I was so irritated and a little jealous that she was able to stay even though I was experiencing all of these labor signs and she wasn't. The hour passed and our nurse came back in only to tell us I was still a 3 and I should go home and wait it out. So we left. I got home and bounced on the ball some more then David decided we should go for a walk. We only got around the block before I felt stronger contractions and definitely a lot more pain. So back into the hospital we went and luckily I was at a 4+ and would be admitted! By this time it was close to midnight and I had debated telling my family because I knew they would drop everything and come down right then and there. But I decided I better just in case things progressed quicker. I talked to my sister and let her know what was going on and of course she wasn't going to wait to come down. She packed her things and got ready to make the 6 hour drive right then. How I love that girl! Not too much later the anesthesiologist came in to give me my epidural. I wasn't really nervous for this at all even though I'm not a fan of large needles. But as soon as he got it in my back my mind changed. I could feel him moving the needle around and he had actually hit too far to the left so he had to move it around until it was aligned correctly (worst pain thus far). Once it finally got in the right place I was pretty mad about it and I let him know when he tried to convince me that the IV was worse than the epidural. They got me laid down in the bed and the room just started spinning and I started to get really sick. My BP plummeted and he started to ask me all sorts of questions. They then had to get a bunch of fluid pumped through my IV while I was laying upside down in the bed haha. After a minute I started to feel a little better and the numbers started to come back up to normal. Because of this they said the baby was going into distress and they weren't going to start the pitocin until he could calm down. They waited until about 4:30 AM to start it and after that it was pretty smooth sailing. By this time my sister and dad were both there with David and I waiting to meet our newest addition to the family. At 10:45AM my nurse checked me and said I was finally at a 10! Woo hoo! I was so excited until she said okay when you feel that contraction you can start pushing...then I started to get really worried-it was actually happening. There were so many emotions going through my body at the same time it was ridiculous! I had no idea what I was in for and didn't even know if I was doing whatever I was supposed to be doing the right way! That epidural sure didn't make it any easier to know that I was actually pushing--that was a little crazy. Something that made it easier..that might be a little too much information for some..was when my doctor said, "Look at all that hair! He's coming into the world with a mowhawk! Do you wanna see?" I was a little nervous to see him coming out cause I was still a little weirded out about everything, but I said yes and am so glad I did. To see that he was so close to being here was such a big help when it came to those final pushes. Finally at 11:17 AM on May 3rd Beckahm David Bishoff decided to grace us with his beautiful presence (I had guessed it would be 11:24). Hearing him cry for the first time was a feeling I'll never be able to describe with words. We are so happy and grateful to have this amazing little boy in our lives. He truly has been the biggest blessing and has made everything so much more fun! We are excited to see who he will resemble more, but as for now we're at a tie-he definitely has the "Johnson cheeks" and the "Bishoff eyes" so only time will tell.
The start of a looong night!
Wasn't nearly as peaceful as this looks..
Love her so much--right by my side the whole time!

Beckahm-officially 1 day old
For as many bad things I've heard about labor and delivery I have to say mine was a breeze! Probably thanks to the epidural, but all in all it wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it would be. The only painful thing that came out of it was the broken tailbone that I eventually had to feel when the epidural wore off =(. We love our new little bundle of joy so much and feel like the luckiest people alive to have this little miracle in our forever family! Welcome to this big crazy world Beckahm. We love you so much and apologize in advance for not knowing what we're doing quite yet, but hey! practice makes perfect! Thank you for bringing so much happiness into our lives!
